Dr. Barry Halpern
A practicing neonatologist for the past 35 years, Dr. Halpern has worked in hospitals throughout the United States. Infants and their exposure to illicit drugs has always been a concern no matter where Halpern was working, but the magnitude of the problem in Columbus this past decade has been greater than any he had experienced earlier. Most recently, Halpern served as the Pediatric Director for the Mother Infant Recovery Clinic (MIRC) in Columbus. This position allowed him to extend his interest in family centered care to the families affected by opiate addiction. It also presented the opportunity to address the social justice issue of access to care for these families, who for too long have been considered unmanageable patients. As the father of children with disabilities, he has personal experience advocating for access to services.
