2011 TEDxColumbus: A Moment in Time

Janet Parrott

Janet Parrott is a former dancer/performer who has translated her interest of cultures, storytelling and movement into moving-images. As a dancer/performer she has performed at Jacobs Pillow, St. Marks Place, Dance Theatre Workshop (DTW), The Wexner Center and The Dance Place just to name a few. She holds degrees in anthropology and filmmaking and as an independent image-maker has directed and produced commercial and industrial work, produced her own films and has collaborated with independent artists creating works for stage and screen. Her films have won awards and been screened at the Three Rivers Arts Festival, The Black Maria Film Festival, The Columbus International Film Festival and with the Chicago Women Filmmakers. Her recent documentary Song of the Soul: Stories of Hospice in South Africa, distributed by Icarus Films, won the Viewer’s Choice Award at the 2011 Western Psychological Association Film Festival. It documents the lives of hospice nurses and caregivers who serve their communities demonstrating the effective practice of hospice and palliative care as an exemplar of community-based compassionate care. Janet is an associate professor at The Ohio State University where she is a recipient of the Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching. In her research she continues to explore ways of integrating social issues, aesthetics and abstract ideas while observing how people define their place in the world.
