Clintonville native, Mikey Butane Thomas, has returned to Columbus after a decade of working over seas and in a handful of states throughout the U.S. Work includes filling positions as a faculty member of university dance programs (Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Savannah College of Art and Design, and Goucher College). He is, once again, a resident of Columbus and working as the director of Movement Activities in the burgeoning arts neighborhood, Franklinton. Prior to this, Mikey worked as an independent choreographer and dancer in NYC, where he also was a member of the Sean Curran Company. Distinguishing awards include citations at the Toronto Fringe Festival, Prague Fringe Festival, the New York Fringe Festival, and inclusion in the Kennedy Center College Choreography Initiative all for new works. Mikey teaches varied movement courses from movement composition to video dance skills, and a variety of
dance technique styles. Computer assisted manipulation of sound scores is a pastime, and often infiltrate his dances. Mikey is most noted for works that approach dance with a bit of irreverence via context. He has a MFA in choreography from The Ohio State University. Mikey has a strong love affair with contemporary art and performance, aerial dance, and Boston terriers.
