As an executive speech coach and trainer, Ruth Milligan now lives at the intersection of deep knowledge fields like science and research to medicine and data / analytics married with speakers’ desires to be highly resonating and engaging. This is a culmination her nearly 30 year career practicing some form of communications.
Ruth founded Articulation in early 2010 after hosting one of the first TEDx events, TEDxColumbus, which is also now one of the longest running TEDx programs in the world. Since then she and her team have coached over 500 people in TEDx or TED-style talks alongside training thousands in their original classes on content framing, storytelling, public speaking, executive presence and accessing science.
Her processional passion is to help organizations of all sizes create storytelling cultures that elevate the opportunities for associates and executives to practice and deliver great presentations. She believes that a great talk can come from a nervous, reluctant or beginning speaker, given the right feedback and development environment.
After ten years of curating, organizing and hosting TEDx events, she is also a seasoned host, emcee and consultant to a wide range of events from major donor events at universities to pitch events inside data and analytics teams. When Ruth and her team are engaged to help with speakers, they also advocate for the best conditions that help make a speaker, and in turn, an event, successful.
Ruth began her career as a speechwriter in politics after receiving a degree in Speech Communication from Miami University. She enjoyed a few years as a major gifts officer at United Way, learning how communication influences development and fundraising, but then returned to her roots to help launch a PR practice within a larger marketing agency. When that agency closed in 2001, Ruth began her own marketing and communications practice, Milligan Communications, which she ran until 2009 when she pivoted into only training and coaching within her current enterprise, Articulation.
In that practice, her current client list includes but is not limited to Ford, UnitedHealthCare, Nationwide, Alliance Data, Huntington, DSW, Chemical Abstracts, White Castle, Ohio State University, and several health care systems. She spends the majority of her time coaching executive 1:1 for communication and facilitating trainings for small groups.
She is a passionate supporter of causes that elevate women and girls. For two years she was a chapter chair for Women President’s Organization Columbus Chapter (2) and is a core team member of the Women in Analytics conference. Articulation’s philanthropy is exclusively focused in helping women and girls elevate their voices and stories. She has served on the board of the YWCA and the Girls Scouts of Central Ohio (Heartland). She is also personally involved in bringing a community pool back to her neighborhood of Clintonville, where she lives with her husband and their two expectedly busy teenagers.
